How to use

The direction matters more than the rate. Adding 20% to 100 gives 120, but removing 20% VAT from 120 gives 100 — not 96. Choosing the wrong direction is the single most common mistake in tax calculation, so the calculator makes it the first choice you make.

  1. Choose your direction

Pick "Add tax" when your figure excludes tax and you need the final price. Pick "Remove tax" when you have a tax-inclusive total and need to find the tax inside it.

  2. Enter the amount

The field label changes with the direction so it is always clear which figure is expected — the pre-tax amount when adding, the tax-inclusive total when removing.

  3. Set the tax rate

Enter the rate that applies to your goods or services. Many countries operate reduced rates for food, books, energy or transport alongside the standard rate.

  4. Read all three figures

Net, tax and gross are shown together. For invoicing and bookkeeping you almost always need all three, not just the total.

Examples

Adding 20% VAT to an invoice

A consultancy fee of 1,500 excluding VAT at 20% becomes 1,800 gross, with 300 of VAT. That 300 is what you collect on behalf of the tax authority and later remit — it was never your revenue.

Extracting VAT from a receipt

A 240 tax-inclusive receipt at 20% VAT contains 40 of VAT, not 48. The net is 240 ÷ 1.20 = 200. Taking 20% of the gross instead would overstate your reclaim by 8.

About this tool

Calculate VAT, GST or sales tax in either direction. Add tax to a price that excludes it, or work backwards from a tax-inclusive total to find the net amount and the tax already inside it. Works with any rate, so it suits every jurisdiction. All calculation happens in your browser.
