How to use

A single discount is straightforward arithmetic. Stacked discounts are where shoppers routinely miscalculate, because two percentages never simply add — the second applies to a price the first has already reduced.

  1. Enter the original price

    The pre-discount price as advertised. If a retailer shows an inflated "was" price, the saving figure will reflect that inflated baseline rather than what the item normally sells for.

  2. Enter the discount percentage

    The headline percentage off. The final price and the amount saved update as you type.

  3. Add a second discount if one applies

    Use this for offers like "extra 10% off sale items" or a coupon on top of an existing markdown. It is applied to the already-reduced price, which is how retailers actually process them.

  4. Check the effective discount

    This is the real percentage off the original price once both discounts are applied — always lower than the sum of the two, and the number worth comparing between offers.

Examples

A single 25% discount

A 120 jacket at 25% off costs 90, saving 30. The effective discount matches the headline rate because only one reduction is applied.

Why 25% plus 10% is not 35%

The same 120 jacket at 25% off is 90; a further 10% off that is 81, saving 39 in total. The effective discount is 32.5%, not 35% — the second discount applies to 90, not to the original 120.
