How to use
Tax systems differ enormously between countries, and a calculator with one country's brackets baked in is wrong for everyone else and stale the moment rates change. This tool takes the rates as inputs instead, which makes it usable anywhere provided you supply figures that reflect your situation.
Enter your gross annual salary
The full contracted amount before anything is taken off. If you are paid monthly, multiply by twelve; if hourly, convert with the salary calculator first.
Enter your effective income tax rate
Use your effective rate — total tax divided by gross income — not your top marginal bracket. Progressive systems tax early income at lower rates, so the marginal rate overstates what you actually pay.
Add social insurance
Pension, health, unemployment or equivalent contributions, as a percentage of gross. In many countries these rival income tax in size and are the reason net pay comes in lower than people expect.
Enter pre-tax and fixed deductions
Pre-tax deductions are subtracted before tax is applied, which is what makes them advantageous. Fixed deductions — union dues, insurance premiums, loan repayments — come out of net pay afterwards.
Examples
A typical salaried estimate
60,000 gross with a 20% effective tax rate and 8% social insurance leaves about 16,800 in deductions, giving roughly 43,200 net — about 3,600 per month, an effective deduction rate of 28%.
The value of pre-tax contributions
On the same 60,000, adding 6,000 of pre-tax pension contributions reduces taxable income to 54,000. Tax and social charges fall by about 1,680, so the 6,000 contribution costs only around 4,320 in take-home pay.
About this tool
Estimate your net pay from a gross salary. Set your income tax rate, social insurance rate, pre-tax contributions and any fixed deductions to see monthly and annual take-home pay plus your effective deduction rate. Rates are yours to enter, so the tool works in any country rather than assuming one tax system.
